Literacy Is Social
Literacy is a very significant part of a child's education. It is developed mainly during the younger years of life for most children. It is important to understand that literacy is social. Sign systems such as art, music and drama are ways that children can express themselves and become literate. It is not simply reading books and teaching words to children. Children need time and freedom in order to develop literacy. Literacy is also individual and cultural. It is individual because each child is different and takes their own steps at their own pace in developing literacy. It is cultural because every child comes from a unique background. All of these aspects of literacy work together while a child is learning to become literate.
