When thinking about literacy and young children, some people may not realize that children are always developing literacy. Children are always learning and absorbing information. From their surroundings children are learning how to recognize symbols within their community. Recognition of these symbols leads to the child making connections from their own personal experiences.
For example, a child might see the Apple logo:

The experience each child has will be different. One child might just see it as an apple with a bite taken out of it. Another child may associate it with computers or cell phones. To further that, another child might say their mom or dad have an apple on their phone or computer which might lead to a story. This may not seem like it is literacy but it is. Children are learning symbol recognition and how to make connections. This will help children develop ways of communication and expressing themselves in the future.
I like the apple example that you gave! It make a lot sense and help me understand that those symbols help children make connections to their real lives. Very thoughtful !
